In 2018, three City Councilmember seats for four-year terms each will be placed on the ballot in 2018 Filing for office for Mayor and City Councilmember opens on May 22, 2018, and closes at 5 p.m. on June 5, 2018. The filing fee is $20 and Affidavits of Candidacy are filed with the City Clerk. If more than six (6) file for the office of City Councilmember, their names will be placed on the August 14th Primary Election.  Filing for the office of School Board Member opens on July 31, 2018, and closes at 5 p.m. on August 14, 2018. Filing fee for School Board is $2.

To be eligible to file for office, the person must an eligible voter; not have filed for any other office at the election; be 21 years of age or more upon assuming office; and have maintained residence in the City for 30 days before the election. Affidavit forms, stating the requirements, are maintained by the City Clerk.

Candidates are subject to the Minnesota Fair Campaign Practices Act and financial reporting requirements. Further information about these requirements is available from the Secretary of State.


NDC4 and Town Square Television are planning several candidate forums for this year’s elections.  We will be partnering with the River Heights Chamber of Commerce, and Dakota County Regional Chambers of Commerce. The South St. Paul City Council Candidate Forum will be held on Thursday, September 13 at 7 PM. We will also be holding forums for the cities of Inver Grove Heights, West St. Paul, and Mendota Heights, and also the MN House of Representatives (Districts 52A, 52B, and 54A) and Dakota County Commissioner (District 2) candidates. Here is a listing of our other forums, for your reference:
